QLD ED Wait Times -- Visualization Drafts
Recharts prototypes for Queensland emergency department data. QLD has the largest coverage (23 facilities including 4 satellite hospitals) and provides both median wait times and patient counts, grouped by health region.
A) List Route Enrichments
1. Hospital rows grouped by health region
QLD's large hospital count demands regional grouping (similar to NSW's district grouping). Each row shows the 24h patients-waiting sparkline, median wait badge, and patient count. Satellite hospitals use a distinct visual treatment.

2. QLD-wide patients waiting -- major EDs vs satellites
Stacked area showing total patients waiting, split by facility type. Satellite hospitals handle a small but measurable share of the state load. Period average: 243 patients (dashed).
3. Regional comparison -- patients waiting & avg median wait
Aggregated per health region. Bars show total patients waiting; dot overlay shows the region average median wait. Useful for identifying regional pressure points.
4. Top 10 median wait time ranking
The 10 major hospitals with the longest current median wait. QLD uses median (not mean) so this is resistant to outlier presentations that inflate averages. Color encodes severity.
B) Detail / Analysis Views
Charts below use Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital as the focal hospital where applicable.
5. Crowding vs median wait bubble chart
X-axis: patients triaged & waiting. Y-axis: median wait (minutes). Major EDs only. Reveals which hospitals have both high volume and long waits -- top-right quadrant is under most pressure.
6. Median wait time comparison -- top 6 major hospitals
Overlaid median wait for the 6 largest QLD EDs. Focal hospital (RBWH) in solid lime, others dashed. Limited to 6 to avoid visual clutter given QLD's 19 major EDs.
7. Patients waiting + median wait over time (RBWH)
Dual metric view: patient count as area, median wait as overlaid line. Shows whether rising patient counts translate to longer waits at this specific hospital.
All data above is mock-generated. Real QLD data will come from Queensland Open Hospitals at openhospitals.health.qld.gov.au with 15-30 min refresh intervals. QLD uses median (not average) wait times, making the data more robust to outliers.
